Welcome to the Pig.

This is the Pig Forum.  The place discuss all things relating to the Blind Pig Guild.  This is where we get to talk about the direction in which the club is heading and where we would like for it to go.

Jeber is structured in a way that allows the Club Founder almost total control over they type of pictures accepted and the types of activities and discussions that occur within the club.  That's good.  And that could be bad.

It's good because people are free to create a club that suits their needs rather than have to settle for something that 'sort of works'.

And it can be bad, ....  Well, I'm not sure how.  But I bet we find out eventually in one club or another.

My hope is that the Pig will be a good experience for its members.  It won't be the right place for everyone.  But those who enjoy traveling, or just photographing a part of the world that they enjoy and want to work on improving their photography skills may have found a good place to meet like minded people.

I'm expecting that we will adjust how the club works as time passes and we get more experience.  I've set up a beginning structure with geographic galleries but I'm not wed to that approach.  I expect that we will discuss changes and decide what to do by consensus.  (Or at least something close to consensus.)

I am going to suggest some rules:

Standard English (or at least your best attempts).

Hopefully some of the members will not be primarily English speakers.  Let's stick to 'Standard' so that they don't have to struggle too hard to follow the discussion.  And let's be patient if they make some mistakes working in a foreign language.

Play Nice

I just don't enjoy being around mean people.  If you want to play "Yo Mama!" games or slam folks for your own amusement  please go away and set up your own club.

(Please don't invite me to join.)

Post world/travel pictures

I'm not very interested in looking at a bunch of pictures from your Aunt Ethel's 97th birthday party.  A couple might be interesting and/or we might be willing to help you solve your editing problems.  But in general - start a Aunt Ethel's Birthday Club....

Pitch in and help

Suggest re-writes, fix my spelling, get over to the Members Helping Members and share your knowledge.  Do whatever you can do to make this a better club and a better site.

A things that won't happen to the Pig

There will never be "Best Photo" Anything.  I'm not interested in photography as a competitive sport.  I think competition ruins photo sites that are designed for helping.

The Pig will never get "too big".  I want a small community of members who get to know each other (web-wise).  I don't know what too big is, we'll have to figure that out as we go along.  But let me suggest a basic rule.

When there are so many new pictures that a post generally doesn't stay on the front page for 24 hours then we're too big.  When we reach that point we need to stop accepting new members.

I Like the sounds of this club. It is something I would like to be involved in. So is Akron Ohio someplace you think people would like to see more of? I have never traveled abroad or anything so most of mine will be in the states.  I think people in other countries might be interested in some of the sites I was thinking about posting.

Keeping the forum small sounds like a real goos idea, and yes give me feedback on my pictures as I am always up for a good discussion, after all no one is perfect.

Akron?  Sure!

Show us what's around Akron - last I checked it's part of the world. Now we've got a member from Akron and one from Cleveland.  If the two of you get busy we might have to open an Ohio gallery.  ;o)

But let me repeat - the rules in the initial post are suggested rules.  My hope is that the real rules are decided by the group as a whole.

Hi. Thanks for inviting me and this seems like a great resource. I'm a long, longtime amateur photo who's been frustrated with why my shots never looked right, and it's been a little hobby this year to try to change that. Hope to learn some here.

And though nobody asked ;-) I absolutely LOVE my Yashica T4, which is really my only camera. Point and shoot, no focusing, but somehow you can get shots that hold up. Perfect for backpacking through the third world. I got the advice from a friend (via my work, which involves hiring photographers) who shoots for national geographic. Couldn't be happier, but soon I'll want to expand my options and I look forward to discussing this and other things here.

OK I am now getting into the swing of things I think, but I have a purely mechanical question (maybe there should be a thread for these, or is there a help area, or ??):

All of the photos in my image pool (and therefore the few I have in the Africa gallery and workshop) show "Dynax 300si" and "UNKNOWN" as my camera.  I have nothing against this company, but I have used an Olympus C750UZ since I went digital, and just this month bought an Olympus SP-500UZ (because I stepped on the other camera AND smashed it into a rock, so it don't move so good no more) and put it through its first paces in Prague.  Yesterday I tried to change the photo information for the few photos I put in the gallery (going to "manage," and then selecting Olympus and C750) but they still do not reflect reality.  Am I doing something wrong?

Let me know if this sort of "help" question should be directed elsewhere in future, and thanks for any advice.

In the Jeber forums (different from the Pig forums - black tool bar) there's a Support forum and the first thread is for site bugs.

I've noticed that this process isn't working correctly but haven't posted it.  Feel free to do so.

Best not to expect a quick fix.  Ali is traveling and last I heard was in southern Thailand/Malaysia and didn't have reasonable (read inexpensive) access to the web.
