| The 1D3 is a big step forward. Then there's Canon's 50meg 1.3x APS sensor which may or may not find its way into a dSLR. It might be more likely a stepping stone to a very high resolution 1Ds type full frame. Canon could make a big resolution jump over the MF digital backs. Most likely wouldn't have the DR of other dSLRs, but for landscape shooters who generally use tripods and often used slower (ISO100 and less) film it would be an interesting option. What I'm wondering is who will be first of Canon/Nikon to add in-body IS. Until they do Pentax and Sony are going to suck away some of the entry level people moving up from IS fixed lens cameras. | ||

| 50MP? Where? As to who'll be the first to add in body IS - I suspect they're trying to solve the challenge of getting in-body to work in conjuction with in-lens. At least I hope so. If they crack that nut, then theoretically you might be looking at a 7-stop+ advantage over a non-non-IS body/lens combo. Now that would be seriously neat :) Of the big two, in that field - my money's on Canon. They seem much more innovative to me, and faster to take up features from other manufacturers too. Of course, since I don't have any money, this is rather moot ;) | ||

| Here's the 50 meg mention. It's getting discussed on the News forum at DPR. http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/04/canon-crams-50-megapixels-into-a-cmos-prototype/ -- Both in-body and in-lens IS - camera might double as a personal vibrator.... | ||

| LOL @ vibrator Hadn't seen that link before - very cool, the comments about the pixel pitch being similar to an 8MP compact seem about right. I haven't done the math though. Bearing in mind Fuji seem to be able to manage good noise levels at that sort of density, there's no reason that Canon couldn't - with a bit of work... My 400D's noisier than I anticipated. It's still very good, but there's more ISO100 noise than I was expecting - i.e. there is some ;) | ||

| Yes I've read the reviews etc. its a fantastic camera but how many people can afford it? Canon makes great cameras. I just think in the consumer market they are do just enough. They are also very good at getting people to buy a entry level and upgrade to a better camera. Nothing wrong with this at all, happens in many things in life. I'm certainly no fan of any one brand. Especially at entry and enthusiast level all dslr cameras are pretty good. After that i agree its Canon and Nikon and thats about it. But if i had a dollar for the number of people who told me Canon has to be good its what the pros use, i'd be very rich. Yes pros do use Canon alot these days, but most people aren't pros. Its a starnge way our mind works. I wish their were stats available showing how many brands of camera people looked at who bought a Nikon or Canon compared to those who buy another brand. I'm guessing most purchasers of canon or nikon only looked at the brand they bought or maybe both Canon and Nikon. they just don't consider any other brand as acceptable for many different reasons. These companies get sales on reputation. Nothing unusual, how many people buy a certain brand car on reputation, quite a lot i reckon. People who buy an Olympus, Sony, Pentax etc i guess probably look at 3 to 4 different brands. Probably lesser brand cars its the same. But back to the original question. If companies like Olympus and Pentax didn't offer things like live view, CCD shift stabilisation, affordable weather sealing etc then i doubt they'd sell cameras. they have to be innovative and offer more to make sales. wow this was a long post. hope you can see the point i'm making. | ||
