HDRI how-to

How to capture scenes where the range of brightness (D.R) exceeds those your camera can handle

The main requirement is a set of images of the same scene but with different exposure values - ideally around 2stops apart. Ideally take the exposures on a tripod so that the image remains the same (as it's easier to merge).

Specific settings I use:
RAW (more dynamic range)
AE bracket -2.5 -0.5 +1.5 (according to HDRsoft a range of 1.5 to 2 stops between shots - I find 2 gives me better highlight/shadow recovery)
Aperture Priority (so that the amount in focus doesn't change between shots)
Manual Focus (so that the focussing distance remains the same)
A preset White Balance (to keep the colours consistent)

The main HDR editing package is Photomatix. Note: The current versions can fix small horizontal/vertical shifts - but not rotation, if you accidentally rotate then you'll need to align the images in something else... I use PTgui for this, although any panorama package that supports identical stitching would do.

Finally: Remember to check the histogram in camera to make sure that you've captured all the dynamic range you need. You may find you need to take additional exposures if the range of brightness is really large.

Have fun!

Thanks Adrian.

I'll give it a shot one night.....
Alot of the landmarks around town i've found difficult to capture the full DR.

Remember, if you're shooting on a tripod things are easier - I tend to just drop the camera into Aperture Priority, and then keep rolling the exposure down until the histogram shows I have enough shots.

Ideally you want the top and bottom shot of the exposure range to show half a histogram if you can - that guarantees the least noise, as boosting shadow detail usually makes noise far more visible. 2-stops apart should be fine.

Good luck, and I look forward to seeing the results!
