Digital Cameras

I'm looking for an affordable quality digital camera.

I'm now using a Canon 35mm and want to get a digital. My Canon's not too bad and I only have two well used lenses so switching companies isn't a problem. I have Nikon gunscopes and they're second to none so I'm leaning towards Nikon. I don't know much about the quality of other cameras although I've read up on a lot of others it's like buying a book, I'd rather check it out of the library and read it before I spend money to own it. Since I can't do that I'd like to hear opinions from those who own or have used.

The camera I'm looking at most is a Nikon D70, or something to that equivalent. The important thing is a budget of around $1000 US (less would be good), something tough that can withstand travel in a lightweight case, work in dusty dirty places,  quick startup, and have a good warranty and service.

Also looking for an underwater housing for the same digital camera. If anyone has experience with underwater photography what's good?

thanks,
Matt

As far as entry-level dSRLs I think the front runners are the Nikon D70 and Canon 350D.

I'm waiting for reviews on the Sony A100 and Pentax D100H (not sure about that model number  - DPR is down at the moment).  Both have in-camera image stabilization which I would like to have.  But not at significant image quality loss.

Nikon has a new dSLR coming out in a week or so.  And I expect something new from Canon to answer the Sony/Pentax introductions.

Excellent reviews can be found at www.dpreview.com.

There's an underwater photography forum at www.steves-digicams.com.

I got the D70s last week... it rocks. I've already saved as much money as I would've spent on film.
