Intentions...

Wondering what each person is 'trying' to do...

The old complaint about judged photography shows, especially club shows, is that over time everyone's photos start looking alike because each person is trying to 'win' by producing photos that the judges like.

I can see that being a danger on critique sites such as this.  If we were to get a strongly opinionated group of critiquers* who shared the same sense of aesthetics perhaps those same conditions would appear.

I'm wondering if there might be a way to avoid drifting in that direction.

What if people were to describe what they were trying to with their work?

For example, I suspect I'm trying to make good National Geographic/travel magazine shots.  Nothing all that creative, just good journeyman shots.  Someone else might be interested in producing modern shots with an old-fashioned form.

If we were to describe our intentions perhaps others could give us feedback as to how well we are doing, what we might do to improve our efforts.

Thoughts?

That sounds like a good idea to me.  I just ran out of new photos, and got busy with establishing a new job/overseas move, so I have been hard pressed for time in the last couple weeks.

What am I trying to do... Hmm... Take photographs that appeal to me, and help others do the same. Whether that's take pictures that appeal to them, or ones that appeal to me is harder to say ;)

I guess I'm probably more Nat Geo than anything too - but I'm not a people photographer, landscapes/wildlife are more my thing.

I'm in the wildlife landscape type things too. I'd love to be a Nat Geographic photographer though.......... Well actually just producing the quality of photo in Nat Geo would be enough.

I guess i hope that people can share ideas that they know of or have tried. I'll suggest things that i think i'd like to see and if the photographer would like to try them and find they don't like it then thats ok by me.

Where was it that I read... "the average nat geo article has around 12,000 photos taken for it..." - obviously that's about 11,990 that we don't see. I'd love to get somewhere around that percentage though :)

I have a friend who went on a shoot with a NG photographer as his "loader".

It was a "rent a lion" shoot back in the days when one could shoot a "tame" lion and pass it off as a capture in the wild.  A number of photographers had pooled their resources and were shooting at the same time.

She said that she loaded over 100 rolls of 36 during the day and other photographers shot over 200 rolls.  (She couldn't load fast enough.)

Those folks have deeper pockets than I.

Also, here's an interesting article about the first major NG shoot that was all digital.
