What makes a good travel photo?

What topic, composition, when does an image qualify as a travel photo?

Now we have several specialist clubs running on jeber I think it's worth discussing what actually makes a travel photo a travel photo.

Is it - a photo taken on vacation (extended or otherwise)?

Does the topic of the photo make it travel or not?

Just kicking off - I know there are many differing opinions here :)

I feel a travel foto is one taken at a place or under circumstances one normally is not in. Essential in travel fotografie is the unknown circumstances. What time does the sun rise / set, do i pay for a portrait, is taking portraits against a religion / believe. So i think taking shots around your house / hometown etc isn't really travel fotografie.

Hows that for filosofical?

Good question Ali and so very subjective.

Who, what, where, when, why and how, hmmm…

To me travel is being someplace other than home.  IMO, one needs not be on the other side of the globe to experience the uniqueness of the world around them.  I can go into my neighbor's garden, my city, the next city, the next state, etc and feel like a tourist taking in the sites.  Heck almost everyday I find something new and amazing in my own back yard.

The subjects that qualify are wider than the mind can envision and ultimately boil down to a personal preference.  For example, I do not care for a picture of a human napping on the streets of Paris or Beijing; for some reason those images do not talk to me.  But a picture that focuses on people in action and/or the surroundings, be they man-made or natural do.

To me a good travel photo is capturing whatever catches my eye as I travel through life that leaves a fingerprint from that time or place.  Thus my view on what would make a good travel photo is extremely broad and not matching with 99.99% of travelers, or so I have been led to believe.

Your question begs to ask another:  Is the definition or view of a photo being a true “Travel Photo” owned by the taker, the viewer or both?

I tend to side with both:  One man’s _____, is another man’s _____.
