The Workshop Display Page...

Starting with a clean piece of paper, what would we want?

OK, I'll go first since you insist.  ;o)

I'm liking the scrolling images that Ali installed somewhere along the way.  I like the ability to compare any one image with any other image.  That part is working for me.  Ideally I fix the image display area at the top ~50% of the screen.

Then right under than would be a scrolling Replies area.  All the Replies for that image would show all the time.  Maybe another ~40% of the screen would show as many Replies as fit.

And at the bottom would be a fixed Comment area.

Clicking on any Rev thumbnail would make that Rev show in the right hand section of the display screen.

Now, I'm not wed to that layout.  Just offering it a jumping off place.  The advantage that I see is that all the 'stuff' is on the page at once.

One can line up the two images that they are discussing and can see the most salient replies.

Seems like it would be less work for the CPU.  A page would have to built only one time per post.  There would be no need for multiple pages per Workshop image.

Bob,
I was just reviewing this this morning.  I personally would like the comment area larger than the 2.? lines size it currently is.  4-5 full lines would work for me.

The needed space for the comment lines could be taken from the following:

Bob's 40% for the replies.  I would like that to be around 30-35%.

The photographer's notes area consumes imo way too much space.  Can the EXIF data be split into two columns and the font be smaller?  Even better pull it out of the notes.  Use a tab to link to this info that opens in a new window.   This would also allow the comments to run almost the entire box.

Actually I thought the discussion was happening in several places in a somewhat disjointed fashion.  Most of it along the lines of "How to we tweak what we have?".

The idea here was to take a fresh look at what we'd like (at this point in Jeber's development).

Sometimes it's more productive to give a fresh re-think to where you're trying to get and do a quick startover rather than a continued 'patch and mend'.

Here's a copy of my suggestion:

After hitting reply i like the first thing on the page to be the purple line with Jeber>>Workshop etc.
The rests above that isn't necessary in a reply and can be left out to save some screenspace.

Next the pics, like they are now. Fixed
Then the reply box. Fixed as well.
Then the old replies, scrollable irrespective of the rest of the page.

The reply box can also be on  the bottom, i have no preference, as long as it's fixed.

Ben

Here's something I would like in the workshop pages - the ability to see the full sized versions while writing.

Make them available side/side or top/bottom.
