| OK, we've posted a bit, played a bit. How are people feeling about the direction at this point? General/specific gripes or suggestions? Why are we getting members who then do nothing? | ||

Club DirectionHappy. the quality of images and feedback is good, very constructive and I've learnt a lot in the past few weeks. Thanks :-) I was thinking that a place to post 'don't bother workshopping this' images would be good. Just like the dog washer. I thought it was interesting, but basicaly of no photographic value. Should that image have been posted as an 'interesting sign' or not? Should I just learn from the feedback and not worry about it? Silent membersif a week goes by after people join and they still haven't posted, I'd suggest removing them from the club. We're up to 15 now and have ~5 actual members. Those that post and then disappear? I'm not so sure. Maybe give them some time to return? Is there any automated way of sending people reminders or ensuring that by default we are all subscribed to our own image & forum posts? The log files would help with this, so we can see if they are dropping by, seeing the feedback and then leaving or if they just forgot to come back.I think we're getting silent members because this is the net, and it's what people do - I've joined a pile of sites that I never use - it's just the way it is. Over time we will collect more and the club will grow and become even more useful. I'm not sure there is any big problem, but it would be nice to hear that from the people that came and went so quickly :-) [Edited: 18:42 - RedAndy ]

| The dog wash. And my 'tyres' image. I like seeing this sort of stuff. It's one of the reasons that I travel. Neither of our shots is great art but perhaps we can learn to do a better job capturing 'weirdness' via posting and getting feedback. 'Join then vaporize' people. Posted a 'feature request' for a way to do a mass mailing. I see no reason to keep names on the list. We win no prizes by having a big long membership list. You can check whether a member has come back by looking at their last log in on the Admin Users page. Of course they could be looking without logging in.... I plan to send out an email to the non-actives on the Pig. Perhaps we could generate a list of the topics/questions. Then work up the body of the email. What would you want to ask? | ||

| Questions to ask: How did you find the quality of discussion in the blind pig - did anything ( or anyone ) make you feel unwelcome or that you didn't want to take part? Did you find the quality of images and critiques too high, too low or just about right? Did you receive error messages while using the site? Did they stop you from using the site effectively? What were they? What are you looking for in a photographic forum site? That's a lot of Qs for an unsolicited email about a site someone has chosen not to use. How many do you think is appropriate? | I'm thinking of a more open ended post. Sort of a "Hi. Where you are?" type mailing. Just ask for a simple statement of why we haven't seen them in the club house. And list the sort of things that you list as memory joggers rather than a big long survey. (Doubt anyone would take the time.) Keep thinking of issues. I'm going to hold off until some of the bugs are squashed and we've got new reply process. I'm thinking that the site in it's current state isn't quite ready for the hard sell. | ||

| Hi Bob and co. I'm so sorry i joined and haven't posted yet, there are various reasons that i won't bore you with, one being my lack of access to an internet connection at the moment!!! If i promise to make a brief post every week to let you know i'm still here and still a willing memeber can you not kick me off please? I expect to be back to some sort of normality in my life with-in a month and then i promise i'll be a lot more involved! I'm posting this because i agree with Bobs thoughts regarding people joining and not posting. Peace and love, DannyJ | ||

| Hi Danny, Don't worry about getting kicked out. I'm sure any letter that would go out would include something along the line of "Let us know if you still want to be included in the membership." And probably something along the line of "If you decide sometime in the future that you would like to be an active member please let us know." If you can get access to make a comment even once a week how about having a say about an image or two? | ||

| I'll give it a shot Bob, thanks for letting me know about how it'll go! I'm sneaking 10 mins on the net at work at the mo, boss not happy about 'personal websites' so am having to post on the sly, have checked out a couple of images and am well impressed with what i've seen! I'll join in the critquing (sp) asap. Peace and love, DannyJ | ||

| Glad to see some input from someone else Danny. There's lots of room for ideas and comments. And more people means less opportunity for the few of us now active to delude ourselves. Don't get yourself into trouble at work over this. Looking forward to when you have your own hookup. | ||

| Things are moving along fine. No need to rush. A group of people will always work out their own dynamic and the character of the club will emerge in its own time. It certainly feels more honest(?) than the other photo/travel sites I lurk upon. I would rather have opinions from a smaller group of people whose judgement I trust, than a load of words from a username. Silent members: Guilty. I'm happy to look at other peoples images and see the advice given on them without the emotional attachment I have to my own. This helps me improve my photography and surely this is the #1 reason for The Pig? I apologise for not yet adding to the workshops. Hey! They all look good to me! I'll be sorting out this situation when I get back to work and start earning some money again after the 6 months around SEA. Gripes: Navigation. I've done this on the Backburner I like Andy's idea of a place to just comment rather than workshop. Can we call it "Aunt Ethels Place" Bob? Okay. Maybe not. | ||

| Silent members: - I think in the 6 months I've been in one place I've completely lost perspective on life on the road! How long is appropriate to keep silent members? I don't want the pig to look like a giant scarey beast when it only has 5 active people. "Aunt Ethels Place" - I come and go on this... I didn't really see the point in anyone taking the time to do up the dog washer, it was a mindless snap. I put no thought into it at the time and really didn't expect anyone else to afterwards. However, now that they have, next time I'll probably do it a little better, so it was worth them taking the time. But then I probably won't post any of the other interesting signs and things I have, becasue they will all suffer from the same photographic defects and I don't want anyone to have to tell me the same thing that many times. There probably is a place for Ethels ( I like the name :-) - perhaps the base rule could be that it's gotta be quirky/unusual and of good value for it's content. If other users want to work on those images then they can, but it's out of the main workshop area. What is working very well for me is the quality and volume of feedback and image revisions. As says it feels honest and having a smaller group is a good thing. [Edited: 05:28 - RedAndy ] | ||

| "Aunt Ethel's Place"? Might work for you. But not for me. I'd have to go with "Grandma Ethel's Place". (Would that make you my uncle?) Maybe I should have some coffee before trying to participate..... Good to see the discussion. I hope there's lots of input from all of us and that this place evolves in some interesting directions. And I hope we leave room for a few unusual/quirky photos. (Perhaps Andy and I can find some way to sneak our in. ;o) And sorry if I'm a bit impatient about getting the activity level up. I've been looking forward to having a place such as this for a couple of years or more - ever since TE ceased to work for me. I really enjoy interacting around photos and I'm feeling a bit deprived. | ||

| The Pig So Far - for me... I'm gnu here. And would really like to be a "good" photographer, or something like it. And now I'm scouring all of my images so that I don't send a crappy one. I suppose I've gotten to the point where I know which ones are crappy, so-so, and reasonalbly good. Now I'm in that (sorry, ego is one of my issues) place where I look harder at what I post (only 4 so far, but don't think flooding serves any purpose) to see if it really IS a good image. Which gets me only strokes, likely. What to do, what to do? | ||

| I like the general set up of the clubs so far. Curious how it will work when the membership grows. One thing i'm missing is the ability to make a selection in the workshop. Two possible selection criteria could be member and gallery. Perhaps this is on the "wishlist" already, but i couldn't find anything. Just testing: [Edited: 07:15 - baw ] | ||

| I don't understand your "ability to make a selection in the workshop" statement. (Could be I haven't had my morning coffee yet. ;o) | ||

| Ïf the number of pics in the workshop grows in the hundreds or thousends it is good to be able to view only part of these pictures. eg only the pics of a certain club member or only the pics from a certain club gallery. Lets say you want to view only your own pics in the workshop. Presently a difficult task, with a selection it's a breeze. | ||

| OK, got it. Sounds like a good idea to me. Seems like it could be tied into the keyword system (when we get that). Make a pitch in the Back Burner forum. Perhaps add it to the keyword thread if you feel it fits. | ||

| Hi Bob, I like the Pig and the rest of Jeber as well. As for missing in action members that can be a tough one. For right now while we are small and going through beta I think a simple private email from the admin to the member could work. I think at this stage things being handled on a personal level would be nice and creates a warm and fuzzy feeling about us. But that is just for now while we are small. But going forward maybe Ali will be able to develop (you are going to hit me and I am going to make Bob look like he asked for nothing) a tool available for admins or better yet system automated to generate an email to inactive members on either a selectable or pre-determined time interval. All inactive members could be notified at once but the members email addresses need to be hidden from one another. In the automated model a report listing the notified members would be generated and delivered to each club's admin. In the perfect world each admin would only see the members in their club. EX: The system flags a member as inactive after 3 months of inactivity. On the first day of every month all members who are flagged inactive are sent an email notification. After six inactive notifications members will flagged in a pending delete state. Then the club admin will have the opportunity during the current month to either restate or delete the member manually. Or at that point the admin could exempt members from deletion and the following month the non-exempted members would be removed. Ouch, you made me put on my database cap! Gang, what are your thoughts on this? I know Ali it is lots of work for you and if I had any idea how to do this I would. Camille | ||

A club for travelers who are working to become better photographers.![]() This is what attracted me to the Pig in the first place. Presently most of the discussions in the workshop are in the "crop and (photo)shop" department. I'm more interested in comments on the original pic, composition, lighting, etc. etc. Furthermore discussions on the place the pic is taken (the travel part). Perhaps someone else has been there as well and has another shot on the same subject. It could be that the workshop seems to invite to post mostly edited versions of the original, but it is of course also possible to post a second pic taken from a different angle, different lighting etc. I realise that Jeber and the Pig are in Beta fase, and it's possible to start a new club, but i'm just curious how others see these things. (i must admit at being a bit frustated by the unlimited of-topic posting i saw on DPReview ;-) ) [Edited: 10:03 - baw ]
