Welcome to Jeber

What is Jeber?  Hopefully the most feature rich photosite that you've ever encountered.

Jeber is built around the model of real world 'camera clubs'.  A place where groups of people who have similar interests can gather to look at each other's pictures and discuss photography.

How each club operates is in the control of the club founder/member.

Clubs can be formed around common interests - hobbies, travel, types of photography, etc. - whatever a group of people desire.  (Look at the 'Themes' menu above for some general ideas.)

Clubs can encourage critical review of the posted photos, can simply enjoy the photos or and variation in between.

Clubs can run 'best photo' contests or choose not to include a competitive element to the club activities.

And clubs can do lots of other things.  Got an idea for the site?

Here's how you use it....

First, look around a little.

Click on 'Members' and take a look at a few personal Galleries.

Click on 'Clubs' in the above menu.  Pick a few clubs and pay them a visit.  Open their Gallery and see the types of images that they enjoy.  Open the Workshop and see the comments that members have made.  Read their forums.

If you find a club that interests you then join Jeber and apply for membership in that club.

If you don't find a club that interests you then why not start one?

You might want to join another club for a while in order to get a feel for how the site works.  Then become a Club Founder.  Round up at least one additional club member and you're off and running.

All sorts of good information can be found in the Users Guide

And notice that this section is written in the Members to Members Forum.  That means that you can Reply with suggested changes and additions that you think might be helpful to others.

The overriding idea is that is not a static site, but one that will evolve using the collective wisdom of all the members.

Enjoy!

What is a Beta Release?

A beta release is where a working site is road tested, used by real users, with real ways of clicking, typing, varied selections of equipment both cameras and PCs. Participating in the beta phase of a site can be interesting, you get to see something grow from it's early beginnings into a useful and fully featured product. As the site is evolving - your feedback will create a site that works well for you.

As a beta user you have a few responsibilities - feedback, bug reports, and suggestions. Try out images from old cameras, strange sizes, look for patterns of odd behaviour, contribute to the forums, user guides. Suggestions for where things can be improved, layouts that don't work on a particular browser.

Finally a particular appeal for those better with words than I.  Please, if you see anything that is clumsely written or mispelt - let me know.  And, if possible, write suggested alternatives.

How Jeber wil be Funded

It's important to be upfront about this - web servers cost money. My financial aims for this site are twofold.
1) cover costs
2) make a living.

Obviously number 1 is more important, every cost this site has comes off my credit card. There is no capital investment, no venture capital fund. (same goes for TravelBlog)

On the plus side financially - there are no marketeers, advertising, middlemen etc etc - costs are low so making money isn't the focus.

The site will be funded in several ways:

1) Minimal advertising - lots of visitors to the site will only browse images, galleries and forums. These visitors will see adverts.   I think it is in the long term interests of a site to minimize the advertising - so there won't flashing graphics, popups and all the things we've learnt to hate.

2) Power users will be charged a subscription fee - this will be introduced further down the line. Any fee charged will be great value, and compete with any of the gallery services currently on the internet.

The intention is to always offer useful functional free accounts, for those that don't use the site enough to justify a subscription or those for whom the cost is too much.

As beta users - any active participants will have their accounts upgraded to the subscription level and as a token of thanks keep that level for at least 1 year (I hope for longer!)

If I can make the advertising side to the site cover costs both the free accounts and subscription accounts will receive bonuses.

Thank you for participating in the Jeber Beta!

Hi

I have just joined your site as a member of travelblog.org, which is a truly excellent weblog.

Two questions, am I able to transfer photos already loaded from travelblog.org in the gallery onto the jeber site as I update my travel journals. As you would know, it is quite a laborious process on overseas servers in latin america. Secondly, from reading your introduction, it seems that a fee will be charged for over 150 images. Is this correct? Any idea on prices.

Good luck with the beta, I think things will be great if travelblog is any indication. I am looking forward to getting my travel photos site up and running.

Kind regards
Tom Rooney
