Ali, this is a great shot!  Beautiful colors and I love how the flower highlights his antenna.  Did you use a macro specific lens for this?

Thanks Camille - I used my 28-80mm kit lens that came with the nikon - it's my only lens :)

Got lucky with the diasy behind the antenna.

Yup, a very nice capture indeed. It's a rare one too, if my identification skills are up to the challenge.

It's clearly a Fritillary, I think it's a Pallas Fritillary (Argynnis laodice)

Thanks Adrian - I had know idea where to start looking for the species (lacking books) - but used google on "Pallas Fritillary" - I didn't look quite right - but this looks spot on - Marbled Fritillary - Brenthis Daphne (assuming that guy is right!) - not so rare but I loved this purple section on the outside of the wing.

Attached another shot - it just didn't open up completely when taking these shots, this one has a little more wing though.

Yup, you're right - that does look a far better fit :)

I noticed the pink/purple fringe, but failed to notice the eyes or lack thereof... D'oh!
