| Bob Wallace (BobTrips) Msg: #2 June 26th 2005 23:25:51 | Good crop on the original Dave. Really interesting picture, wish I knew more about who these sadhus were. Good framing on the bull. Big problem here is with the busy background, it's really distracting. I used the selection brush to select the background from the bull and sadhu and then darkened and slightly blurred the background, Then I inverted the selection and increased the contrast and sharpened the rest of the picture. I think that if I were doing it over I might select only the bull and darken/blur the sadhu as well. Anyway, this should give you some ideas about what you might do to bring more focus on your subject. (You might want to clone away the bike tire and fender to remove any modern touches. |

| Bob Wallace (BobTrips) Msg: #3 June 27th 2005 00:10:33 | Just playing a bit. Selected 'not the bull' and removed the color. I've got mixed feelings about this technique but it does make your subject stand out. |

| Dave Mayer (Kane) Msg: #4 June 27th 2005 00:32:42 | The story on the cow - I had about 30 seconds to snap this pic. I'd THOUGHT about it for 10 minutes - in the previous minutes the cow had both front feet on the chest of the guy in the background, but I didn't want to do the "Rs 50 for a picture" thing... Can you give me a tip how to remove the color? I tried the other day (with Paint Shop Pro v.7), but failed miserably. I do have Photoshop v.6 if that's the only way I can do it. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Bob Wallace (BobTrips) Msg: #5 June 27th 2005 01:10:29 | I used Photoshop Elements, I would imagine that the process would be about the same for other programs. First, and the hardest part, select Nandi from the rest of the image. I used the Selection Brush. I first hit View and then Actual Pixels. Then I zoomed in a bit more. That way I could get right on the edge with some precision. Then I clicked on Enhance -> Adjust Color -> Remove Color. Then I clicked on Selection -> Invert and back to Enhance -> Brightness and Contrast to boost the contrast on the colored part. (I think I darkened the B&W part as well.) Play around with brightness and contrast in the two 'parts' and see what suits you. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Dave Mayer (Kane) Msg: #6 July 4th 2005 14:34:28 | I got frustrated on the first attempt (I'm using Paint Shop Pro v.7 (don't like v.8) for PC, but may start using Photoshop CS2 for Mac soon), but it "came to me in a dream". In PSP, you select an area and use Colorize and set the Hue and Saturation to 0. In case anyone reading this needs to know.. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Adrian Warren (AdrianW) Msg: #7 July 10th 2005 20:36:00 | Nice shot! I really like the impressive colour pallette you've captured here - in some ways the animal is almost surplus ;) A couple of suggestions though - firstly there's no true black in this scene, but I think there should be. In Photoshop AutoContast will fix it nicely. Check the histogram when you take the shot and before you upload. In reality if you haven't done any post processing then I suspect half a stop negative exposure compensation would be a good idea (since you're also just clipping the tops of all three channels). Otherwise the only other thing I'm not quite so keen on is the crop - well actually the aspect ratio of the crop, it feels like it desperately wants to be square, but it isn't. I'd be tempted to make it square. Anyway, a very nice colourful capture :-D | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Dave Mayer (Kane) Msg: #8 July 10th 2005 22:56:08 | Well, let me answer all of that.... First though, I appreciate your comments. I've always been in the "I take a picture, and that's the way it is" school... Umm, not a school, but ya know... I really never THOUGHT of making them "better" once I take them. This pic (as said above) was a 30-second or so idea, so there wasn't much planning other than getting the camera out. I read a bio of a member here that said something like I'd write - I'm starting to "see" pictures that need to be taken these days - and sometimes they come out nicely. But now, you've (Blind Pig) created a monster.. I've been using, for little things, Paint Shop Pro for years - I've been good enough at it for my needs. The newest pic I've moved over to Photoshop to finish. It's coming along nicely, but slowly as I learn the features. Now to suggest to Ali that I can see your message to properly respond... Thanks again, | |||||||||||||||||||||
