With digital the transition is very abrupt. Overexposure with digital means areas of pure white where one would like to see some detail, in the flower petals, for example. I'd say that some parts of some blossoms are overexposed. Zoom in really close and see if you see detail. But digital out performs film in the dark/shadow areas. One can often pull useful detail from the shadow areas of digital when all you would get is dark blobby areas with film. So to be on the safe side, underexpose a bit. In the middle of the day I often set my EV value to -2/3 and bracket. That gives me a -2/3, a -1 1/3, and a 0 exposure. I've never found an overexposure to be useful. Use your histogram. "Shoot to the right" but avoid pilling up pixels on the extreme right.
| Bob Wallace (BobTrips) Msg: #2 May 17th 2007 07:58:33 | While I had my editor open I took a look at this shot. I checked the histogram and found that there was only a small spike at the right side. The shot really isn't blown out. I used the Shadow/Highlight tool and brought the highlights down quite a bit and detail popped out. And I lightened the dark areas a bit. I've cropped down to about half the frame to make it easier to see the details. I'd say, process again and repost a new version. |

Sometimes a shot that was captured correctly will get blown out in post-processing. P.S. I tend to find isolated waterlilly flowers look better than a mass of foliage, so try that too!
