| Justin Watson (Justin) Msg: #1 May 10th 2007 08:57:25 | I love these kinds of photos... You have a nice shot but i think you could have taken an even better photo. My suggestion after looking at your settings is: Use a tripod first of all for these kinds of shots. Then set ISO to as low as you can go ISO100-200 is good. Then adjust your DOF with the aperture. I usually look at around f11-13. hopefully your shutter speed will be slow enough to blur the water (usually 1/2 sec upwards). If not use a filter like a polarizer or a neutral density filter that actually slows your shutter speed down. What you have here is some blurring but its sort of half way between frozen still and blurry. More blur would have left a nice ghostly flow of water. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Unfortunately I don't have a tripod at the current moment but will have one in aabout a month (ordered a nice Carbon Fiber model). Given the lighting conditions, the lack of a tripod, and lack of a neutral density filter this was the best I was able to accomplish. Thanks again!
| Justin Watson (Justin) Msg: #3 May 11th 2007 08:55:53 | I think you did extremely well to get the shot handheld. I'm going through the process of buying a new tripod myself. I've learnt the cheaper ones are cheap for a reason. They do a decent job, but a bit of wind and the wobble. So maybe not carbon fibre for me, but I'm liking the Manfrotto 190PRO mainly for the reason i can pull the centre column out and put it horizontally. Great for macro photography to get my camera closer to the bugs and flowers. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Perfect for macro. My brother has a Manfrotto 055 PRO-B, but the column arrangement on that requires things to be unscrewed before you can shift it - and it only goes vertical/horizontal, there's no option for varied angles. Of course if you fancy a challenge there's always the Benbo Trekker range - my brother describes the setup process as "like wrestling with an irate octopus". I never had any problems with it - well until it fell apart, but that always seems to happen to my tripods after a couple of years anyway ;)
