Yep another one :-)

I'm most annoyed as i didn't finish work earlier. It was one of the best sunsets i've seen in ages. Anyway had enough ambient and artificial light to take this photo.

Nice shot Justin - definitely the best yet of this series, IMO. I like the way the bridge leads us into the shot, and the tower stands alone. The colours are also good - yellow and blue are complementary, so that works well too. The sky's also good, with the clouds seemingly radiating out of the ground.

Carillion V also makes me think of a rocket - which is cool, as the tower stands out, almost like one :)

Things I'm less keen on - the tower's not straight. Not sure about the half tree on the right hand edge either - might crop that.

I also think a little more sharpening would probably improve it, as would slightly less JPEG compression - at least on the 800px version I looked at.

Also, you don't need to shoot at f/22 to get this type of shot to work - I suspect f/8 would get you a sharper image, whilst remaining in focus throughout. You are at 18mm afterall!

Yeah i took this shot quite a while ago. I agree with your suggestions. I'm probably a bit more knowledgeable about photography since that shot as well :-)

I must go back there one day after work as i have a better camera and a few better lenses now.

Now that a bunch of pictures disappeared and the tail end of the 'yet to be critiqued' have surfaced I'm finding it quite interesting to revisit my posts from a year ago.

I doubt that I would have stuck any of them up now.

Perhaps we are learning a little something.

Well, I had to delete mine since the admin does not react to messages and so 200 pics for the unconnected it is.

Actually a similar shot to this is in my Pentax Photo gallery. They actually look at your photos you submit and only aapprove ones they deem good enough to show the capbilities of the equipment.
So the series i shot at dusk that night were certainly the better ones. I've learnt that now and try to always do my "night" shots at dusk.

"try to always do my "night" shots at dusk."

Good point.  Hadn't thought about that before, but shooting a dusk does give one a sky with some color and possibly not as much overall exposure range.

It's definitely not as much exposure range Bob. Generally speaking dusk is the best time - however the contrast is greatest at night, and sometimes the lack of something can enhance the shot. For example, shooting at night has made it all about gold and black - if I'd shot earlier we'd have a range of colours, which doesn't fit my opinion of what the shot was about...

well maybe not quite as general as what i said, but often i find things like cityscapes much better while there is some ambient light in the sky.

Of course a true night shot gives a different result, but i do like the dusk shots usually much better than the shots i take after the sun has set completely.

I agree, I'm just saying that there are almost always exceptions to this sort of thing.

I've been suggesting "try shooting around dusk" on my critiques over on TE for the past couple of years I've been there ;)
