OK, the overall picture does little for me.  It's cluttered, poorly exposed, and just doesn't leave me wondering about what I'm seeing.  There's a guy standing too deep in the shadows, the woman in the right corner is so oddly positioned that she looks cut and pasted onto the shot.

So, what to do?  Well, I think there's a redeemable portion of the shot.  I cropped it out and tried to do a bit of exposure adjustment.  There wasn't a lot I could do, working with such a small number of pixels, but it should give you some ideas.

And what's missing that would make this shot (potentially) interesting is a good caption.  Are we looking at the leading general of the North Korean Army holding a small version of the globe that he intends to conquer or the doorman at a hotel in Brunswick, New Jersey?

(Being a bit harsh here.  Sometimes a firm kick in the pants can cause one to move forward.  ;o)

Thanks for your candor, Bob.  I think as the unofficial patriarch of the Blind Pig, you are surely entitled to some quality control authority.  I always appreciate honesty, even if it isnt superficially validating. It certainly helps us to correct patterns that we may be inadvertanttly perpetuating, and become better at finding the proverbial acorn.  This shot troubled me for the reasons you mentioned, but I found it interesting because of China's overly militant image in the eyes of much of the world.  This picture typifies the state of their police state as I percieved it while in Beijing.  Anyone in uniform seemed either to not care about anything going on around them, or were off duty...I will try this crop on my own.  I think it does improve the image a bit.  At least it unclutters it some.  :-)

"Unofficial patriarch" hell!  I'm the Head Hog!  ;o)

On a more serious note, if we aren't honest with each other then what are we going to get out of this site?  If all people want is non-critical praise there are tons of "pretty picture" sites.  The reason I started this is because I wanted a place where people gave me honest, critical feedback so I could improve.  But sometimes that's difficult to both give and receive.

Hahaha..head hog.  I like it.  Yeah, I gotta say I've been very reluctant to put too sharp an edge on any of my critiques here lest it start a fight or drive someone away, or cause a general unwarranted, baseless negativity, but I agree with you completely and appreciate the honesty.  What good comes of praising a shoddy picture?  It just increases the probability that neither the photographer nor the critic will improve their skills as a result of interacting with one another.  Thanks again for your enduring effort here.  I have definitly started to take photography more seriously and have composed overall better shots since joining the Blind Pig.
