I am always impressed by your B/W  pics (b/w photos are a favorite of mine anyway).  I would like to see some texture on the boat itself.

Good suggestion.  I'll play with it and see if I can figure out how to post a version.  Thanks for the comment!

Bringing details out of the shadow areas works for me.

Also consider a crop.  I find the left side of the frame not all that interesting and want to see more of the boat and people.

The original version works as well to set a mood of isolation.

Personally I prefer the composition of the original version.

Shadows wise I'd prefer a version between the original and the first repost - remember there are supposed to be shadows there in reality, so brightening them up too far risks making the image look artificial IMO. That's not to say that adding a bit more effective contrast to the shadow areas isn't a good idea of course ;)

I agree.  Taking out the shadows makes it appear like a painting, with the grain and the surreal image.  The dark contrasts on the sunny day at the beach is natural, real, seen through the lense in its original beauty.  And to widen the composition, seeing it from both sides of the boat, makes the the woman and child feel more solitary before the expansive stretch of ocean before them.

Well if anything this photo just shows that we all have different tastes and no comment is wrong, just a different opinion or perspective.

Haha, yes, and how great it is to have a place to see, hear and take in everyone's idea.  I extend my gratitude.
