I like the focus on the eye.  It captures a sense of wisdom and the angle of the neck makes the bird seem humble.  Nice shot, as usual.  I wish I could see all of the beak just to complete the look, but I think that might detract from the eye.

Nice, but way too dark. A slight run over with Curves, one point up left, and then fractional Shadows/Highlights (0/5%) works wonders IMO. Reduced the Saturation/Brightness on green to tone the grass down a bit.

Remember if you have any doubts about the exposure, check the Histogram in PS.

Thanks, A.  The histogram is a good tool that I hadn't been using.  

Here's yet another version.  I think in your edit you loose some detail in the upper left and upper eye area.  A bit too bright perhaps.

The background in your version.  Is that caused by you working from a site-furnished Jpeg as opposed to working from the original as I am doing?
