Great shot, will be making sure I get more photos of people sleeping :) - I wanted to see this in black and white and grainy so, I switched on photoshop elements and - 1) remove colour, 2) add noise 3) brightness -3 contrast +11 - and this is the result. Hope you like it... not an attempt to improve the original just a different take on the same subject.

I like the B&W version.  Takes away the 'now' and makes it potentially 'then'.  Except 'then' he wouldn't be wearing western clothes.  And maybe not have such a western haircut.

One thing that I wondered about when first editing this picture were the bright-white areas in the upper left.  Seems to me that they are distracting and might be better burned in some.

Why burn them when you can crop? To be honest I find that less distracting than the bright patch on his chest anyway...

Cropping removes the baskets, which I enjoy.  I've got a 'thing' for baskets.

Toning down the T-shirt might be a good idea....

The baskets are part of the environment, but IMO there isn't enough of them for it to be a true environmental portrait - so I'd probably knock 'em on the head myself.

This would be a quick and dirty of what I'd do...

Cropped, and then Shadows/Highlights Highlights@100%

Yep, I like that.

I'd probably tone down the 'red stuff' a bit as well.  Draws my eye there and makes me ask "What's that?"  And there's no answer.

Right, roughly selected the red rope with Lasso, then used Hue/Saturation Red/-30 to tone down the rope. Used a little USM on the face to bring out his expression slightly more. Also cropped fractionally tighter... I hope you like :)
