Took this photo rather spontaneously and am pretty happy with how it turned out, especially the blurred background. It hasn't been touched-up at all so if someone has any suggestions, please lemme know :)

Hi Dave, Welcome to the Pig.

Your shot.  First, we all have different ideas of what's best. I'll share mine but they might not work for you at all.  So take my suggestions (or the suggestions of anyone else) as an idea to consider.  Certainly not as a message from on high.  ;o)

OK, framing.  One of my favorite statements is "If the picture doesn't grab you, you probably weren't close enough.  In my re-edit I cropped to make the flower, the subject of the picture, more dominate.

Then there's a 'rule of thirds' that (loosely) says, "Don't stick your subject dead center.  Frame so that your main subject falls about 1/3rd of the way from an edge.  Not a hard and fast rule, but one that often seems to help.

OK,post processing.  I decreased the brightness, increased the contrast, used the burn brush to darken the beige area behind the flower a bit.  Light objects of no special interest can drag one's eye from the subject of a flower.

Finally exposure.  The shot was just a bit over exposed (IMO).  Check the lightest areas of the lower petals.  They've gone all white on you, they're "blown out".  With digital when you overexpose you loose detail and there's no way to get that detail back.  I generally bracket when I shoot and during the middle of a sunny day I set my camera to -0.3 or -0.6 EV so that the captures are a bit underexposed.  I can lighten somewhat but I can't do anything about blown out areas.

Nice start.  Let's see more.

trying to get the image posted -
---

I screwed up the minimum image size in my first attempt.  I had to make the file large enough to meet the 480 pixel minimum.  Increased the 'canvas' size which gives the white frame.  Could have done a resizing, but didn't think of that....

Leaving this second text stuff for bug tracing.  Had another problem while uploading.

Hi Dave,

Bet you didn't think you were signing up to be a test rat, huh?

I tried a different approach with the 'crop too small to be accepted'.

I resized the file to 480 pixels wide rather than increasing the canvas size.
