Photographers Note:
I took this one between caves at Dambulla.  I like the insect, and the colors against the green leaf and dark water, but there is a fish in the lower left corner that would make the picture (for me) if only he were more visible.  Any help there or other suggestions?

Good shot! You've captured this one well - the strong colours make for a stiking composition - I've always been fond of waterlillies and lotus flowers for that very reason :)

A bit more JPEG compression than I'd like though, I think sharpening the original a bit more would improve it - but the artifacts make sharpening this version fairly futile IMO.

Right, on to the fish - glad you mentioned where, because without that knowledge I'd never have found it!

NewLayerViaCopy, Shadows/Highlights 100/0%, Curves (s-shaped to increase contrast, two points one on the top quarter pulled top left, the other left on the low quarter). Knocked out the areas we didn't want to boost using a soft edged eraser. There's probably more detail in the original, but sadly one of the first casualties of JPEG compression is shadow detail...

Anyway, a nice shot and I hope you like my workshop :)

Christopher, you really compressed the file a lot more than needed to get it on the web (unless you're fighting limited time on a dial up connection).

The site permits one meg file and this one is under 100Kb.  (I was trying to work with it earlier and couldn't sharpen it.  Thanks, Adrian, for pointing out the problem.  So much to learn....)

BTW, really like the shadow.

Wow!  That looks great.  I will try your very helpful steps on my original once I get home and buy PSE or PS.  The original file was a TIFF (11.2MB).  I don't recall whether I turned that into a JPEG or took the photo from my website (in which case it would've been walloped twice), but was hurrying to get images into my Image Pool before this trip so that I could contribute while away.  I don't have any particular software for changing single files to JPEGs as I tend to just open in whatever program (Camedia usually) and then just "save as" a JPEG.  (I use GalleryMaker for bunches of files.)

Thanks again .
