I never thought it was possible to make Baltimore look pretty. And I say that as a Maryland native. Nice shot, really like the amber/yellow cast to the lights.

This is a striking picture.  I like the way you framed it with the lit highway moving from center to back right, takes the eye from one part of the frame to another.  And the line of white lights coming from the back left adds another strong element.

Seems to me that the sky is noisy and the steam (?) plume detracts from the sharp sky/ground edge.  Looking closely at the sky I see a lot of Jpeg artifacting that may come from heavy compression.  You've got more room on this site so you really don't need to step that heavily on shots before posting.

I smoothed (blurred) the sky and cloned out the steam.  And sharpened.  See what you think.

Bob: You are correct - the sky did bother me and I struggled with it.  I like how you blurred and cleaned it up.  I'll keep in mind the recommendation on posting - thanks!

I actually was trying to avoid reflection from the glass in my window since it didn't open.  I turned off all light sources in my room, set the exposure to auto, positioned the camera with towels on the window ledge and used the self timer since the exposure was going to be long and I didn't have a tripod.  I was real lucky!

Flailey: I lived in Maryland for 13 years and though not a native always found Baltimore and especially the Inner Harbour a great place for photography.

Another suggestion is the horizon is dead centre. given the sky is boring it would have been nice to move the horizon up a bit.
But yeah its a really nice shot.

Great point and a reminder to ALWAYS bring a tripod - even a table top one!  I used the self exposure mode to reduce vibration and had the camera braced on towels on the window ledge!  If I had the tripod I could have panned down!

you had more trust in the window ledge and towels than i would :-)
I've seen an advertisement for but not seen in shops a tripod with flexible legs that can grip around and type of pole, ledge, looked great for travelling.

I think it was called a gorillapod.....

I found the GorillaPod via Google - it is made by JOBY.  Pretty interesting.  It is designed for "Compact Digitial Cameras" according to the site.

I emailed them, apparently a larger version for heavier cameras is going to be sold in about 3 months.
My camera is 26 ounces and the gorillapod limit is 13 ounces. Still the idea is good if it works like the photos show it works!
