This was my first attempt at fireworks. I was up on a hill and unfortunately the fireworks didn't go as high in the sky as I expected but did manage to silhouette the flag pole of Parliament house.

Pretty danged good for a first attempt, IMO.  I sharpened it.  There is a bit of a red cast to the black but I couldn't find a simple way to remove it.  

It would have made a great image had you been able to shoot from a bit more to the left and a bit higher.  That would have centered the flashes on the flag pole.
