| Andy Leach (RedAndy) Msg: #1 May 24th 2005 19:13:13 | This is the original of the main image. The main image was cropped, levelled and then 'sepia'd. I briefly made it b/w but didn't like how cold it became, while it was a pretty chilly morning, the tent was fine without the fly and it was emotionaly warm. |

I think I would have cropped a bit higher on the bottom. That would create more of a pano and add a more dramatic feel (IMO). (Now let's see if the image loads....) --- It did. Hummm.... --- A bit more on the image. I wish the original capture had gotten all of the bush on the far left. I think if most of it were shown the image would feel more complete. | Andy Leach (RedAndy) Msg: #3 May 24th 2005 21:37:53 | Thanks for telling me about the rock, I'll take a closer look. Interesting, it does make it more panoramic. Agreed on the missing ½ tussock. Would you have ended up here from the original? I suspect it's only one of my favourites because 1/I'm in it 2/It was a great morning on a great trip. Does #1 mean I didn't leave my ego at the door and now have to leave? [Edited: 21:39 - RedAndy ] | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Bob Wallace (BobTrips) Msg: #4 May 24th 2005 23:14:00 | I'm pretty sure that I would have cropped to a pano. I've really been captivated by the ability to break free from the rigidity of the slide mount and crop to fit the image (as I see it). I doubt that I would have tried sepia. Works great here. Sometimes I play with some of my shots and do a quick B&W. I'm surprised at what I find. I shot film for so long that I'm having to learn new tricks. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Ali Watters (Ali) Msg: #5 May 25th 2005 03:55:26 | This is an extreme edit. I think part of the beauty of the shot is the big sky, in fact I thought the tent, model (or Andy), and bushes could be equally well represented by sillouttes. Tried to bring out the colours of the sky more to make extra interest and a little surreal. The edges again have my usual slight glow - more time and I'd fix it. Also flipped the direction for fun. |

| Bob Wallace (BobTrips) Msg: #6 May 25th 2005 08:47:28 | Ali's version works for me because of the bit of red/pink that makes it look like Andy is looking into the sunrise. In the sepia version it looks like he could be sitting with his back to the sun and that takes a tiny bit away from the image for me. I would have cropped down quite a bit in Ali's version. The large white area of sky adds nothing for me and tends to pull ones eye away from the subject. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Andy Leach (RedAndy) Msg: #7 May 25th 2005 14:40:50 | I like it, I am actually facing somewhat towards the sun, watching a bunch of sheep all watching sunrise. I'm not keen on the direction flip, but probably only because I know which way I was facing. Yes, the glow is offputting but the colour adds a welcome dimension into it, I'll give it another crack later and see what I get. Thanks [Edited: 14:41 - RedAndy ] | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Andy Leach (RedAndy) Msg: #8 May 29th 2005 03:53:31 | Here's my colour version. What I did using the Gimp
It came out okay, but I think I prefer the original. This version seems to lack soul somehow. |

| Bob Wallace (BobTrips) Msg: #9 May 29th 2005 09:33:46 | I like what you've done with the cropping and removing the clump of grass on the far left. I like the sepia color better. There's not a lot of interesting color in the last version. In the sepia version I get dragged into the feel of sunrise on a cool morning in the wilds. (Wish I could see the original as I type this. Need a re-work of this function.) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Andy Leach (RedAndy) Msg: #10 May 29th 2005 15:12:46 | Agreed, I think my rework missed most of the point of Ali's colour version. The image got very grainy when I tried to push it too far so I stopped in bland land. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Andy Leach (RedAndy) Msg: #11 May 29th 2005 15:24:47 | Sticking with the sepia but using the new crop and removing the tussock. This looks stronger than the original IMO. Thanks - this workshop worked very well for me! |
