This shot needs a needs a little work. Interested to see how others would approach this. Crystal clear day - the cameras date is incorrect (cracked the LCD screen so was able to upgrade to the D70 - any excuse), must have been late summer 2003.

It's an impressive building but the perspective makes it look like it's falling backwards.

I did a quick (and very dirty) Workshop to show that the perspective can be changed with software.  I didn't do a very good job - not much experience with perspective.  Perhaps someone else can lend a hand.

And the contrails are distracting.  I started cloning them out and screwed it up royally.  (I'm just learning PSP.)  So I quit and just made the sky blue.  But that should be enough to give you some ideas.

As Bob says, the perspective is a little distracting - although the biggest problem (IMO) is that you're not quite square on to the building itself.

I've posted a Workshop for you. First applied a little barrel distortion correction using PanoTools (free PS plugin), Radial shift -0.005. Then Rotated 1.04°CW, value derived from an average of the lowest horizontal and the highest. Then used Skew to pull the verticals straight by eye.

Then converted to B&W using ChannelMixer, +100 Red, +20 Blue, -15 Green or there abouts. Then added some Film Grain.

Hope you like it :)

OK, Adrian's here.  Going to have to hook up my good monitor now in order to minimize the number of times I embarrass myself.  ;o)

Would it also work with photoshop Elements?

Like the effects - it's as though the shot could have been taken 50 years back! probably less contrails then :)

Why did you choose the -15 on the green?

Hi Bob :)

Ali: I think the technical term for it is "because it looked better" ;) There's no magic setting for the ChannelMixer, each image has a different optimal setting depending on the colours and their intensities. Just experiment. In this case I think I wanted to get the roof mid way between the building and the sky in tone.

I think PanoTools should work with PSElephants, but I don't have that installed, so it's hard to say for certain... The official website is here maybe it'll tell you :)

Thanks - I've downloaded and added to photoshop elephants 2.0. Copied the photoshop plugins to the plugins folder and added the pantools.dll to the photoshop exe folder. Andy will be pleased to know there is a Gimp plugin included.

It appears under filters and looks fine - my first attempt at a panorama has just failed - I am more than sure that's my fault, yet to read the manual beyond INSTALL. Lots of fun to have some time soon...

PanoTools is great for correcting barrel distortion and the like, but it's a bit of a faff for Panoramas - you're better off using something like PTgui (or PTassembler) which handles the setting of control points etc in a more a user friendly fashion...
