But that's the easy part.) At one level this image lacks a subject. But I think that's OK, the whole frame is full of subject if one looks at that way. I think a huge panoramic of this would be pretty wonderful. (Good excuse to go back and shoot a lot of frames. ;o) It looks a bit 'harsh' to me. Especially as it looks like the sun was lower in the sky and not behind you causing bright areas to bounce back. Is there a chance that it's over sharpened? (I tried a bit of blur in my version and it seemed to take an edge off.) Maybe your version is "as it was"? |

| Walt Foster (Walt) Msg: #2 July 12th 2005 19:09:13 | Yep... it's probably oversharpened... though this one is a scan of a negative... before I went digital. I have a tendency to oversharpen that I try to guard against with varying success. It was taken in September, after all the grasses were dry and brown. But it's one of the harshest landscapes on earth so maybe a bit of harshness in the photo isn't all bad. I agree- a panoramic composite would be great... now that I know how to make one, I'll have to go back for sure. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Not convinced it's over sharpened, nor that I'd crop the sky, but to each their own. The thing I find disconcerting are the shadows though, they're clearly blue - and they really shouldn't be! I'm guessing it's to do with haze and UV at long distances, but I'm not 100% sure - either that or its a scanning artifact. Try playing with Hue/Saturation on Blue and see what you think - I'd be tempted to take the brightness and saturation on the Blue down a little myself... | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Andy Leach (RedAndy) Msg: #5 July 14th 2005 06:08:03 | I had no idea of the scale of the badlands before looking at this. Attached is a shot taken near Lago Musters, Argentina where my partner said 'It's like the Badlands but a bit smaller', more of an understatement than I'm used to. ( Please don't feeback on my trashed sky and awful shot, I'm ashamed enough posting it this close to Walt's shot as it is ;-). I'm really liking revision 2 but agree with Bob that it seems a little over harsh, looks like oversharpening but if Adrian says it isn't I'm certainly not going to argue... |

| Adrian Warren (AdrianW) Msg: #6 July 14th 2005 12:25:23 | Andy, remember that there's no such thing as "perfect sharpening" - everyone has different preferences. I prefer things on the sharp side, doesn't mean you or Bob are wrong - it's one of those subjective areas. The only time I'll really agree that something's oversharpened is when I see haloes forming... Actually I really like your shot - I particularly the almost rainbow strata on the far side behind the buttes. | |||||||||||||||||||||
