I do like the original better because it conveys the moving from near to far a bit better imo. The edges of the red gravel leading towards the elephants as well. What do you think?

I know what you mean about the longer foreground.  It does add more depth.  I'm a bit bothered by the slight OOF in the closest area.  Perhaps you could improve that with some careful use of the sharpening tool?

I tried sharpening the foreground a bit.  Perhaps ham-handed.  And I cropped the left off a bit for fun.

I think we're not going to agree on the composition. Sharpening looks fine, but the rule of thirds isn't going to work for me on this one.
