I like this kind of shots. Lots of interesting faces around this world. Lighting is good, even the white shirt has detail.

Thanks Ben.  This is one place that bracketing paid off.  This is the underexposed shot, the 'on' shot lost the detail in the white areas.

BTW, this guy asked me to take his picture and struck the pose.  He was one of a group of people making and selling garlands and all were excited by having their picture taken.  It's nice to get off the tourist trail....

I love it when that happens :) I'm bad at taking shots of people, about the only time I get a shot is when I'm asked to. Probably should have discussion going on this in the forum.

I like this shot also - one straight from the camera that I wouldn't do a thing with - bar print it :)

You're assuming that I didn't do anything to this one before posting.  ;o)

Actually there was a woman in an orange sari standing deep in the background and the orange bled through.  I blacked it out.

I almost never took 'people' pictures when I used film, certainly didn't make many portraits.  Digital has really changed the way I photograph.  Now that I can show people their picture I enjoy taking and sharing in a way that I couldn't with film.

as a body of work, your portraits are pretty amazing.  i really liked your old delhi gallery on pbase.  individually great shots but together, its like you are walking through old delhi.
portraits are my weak point - i'm usually too self-concious to ask people.  i usually end up shooting candid shots from my waist or chest.

Thanks Animesh,

I took very few people pictures when I shot film.  That changed with digital largely because it didn't cost money and because I could show the picture to the subject.

I had a some reluctance to shoot people at first, a bit hesitate to ask.  But found that it takes so little, just make a little gesture with your camera and look give a quizzical smile and almost all the time people agree.  (Not so in some areas, especially with Muslim women.)

Give it a try.  Start with approaching the people with whom you feel most comfortable, perhaps people your own age or kids.

I'm now enjoying the heck out of shooting people.  It gives me some personal contact rather than walking around looking at people as if they were in a zoo.

Someone's getting pretty good at this post-processing lark, I didn't notice anything out of place, not even on the prints you've shown me! Nicely done :)

As the others have said, nothing really to add - it's nice and crisp, and the composition works well. Actually possibly one thing, his neck looks a bit magenta - do you think it was really like that, or is it a camera/processing artifact?

I had bracketed that shot and went back and looked at the different versions.  Looks like skin color to me.
